Project Overview

A vocational school located in Orange County, New York, contacted Air Purifiers, Inc. to provide a new welding fume extraction and filtration system for its welding education program.

The facility required a comprehensive ventilation solution capable of capturing welding smoke, fumes, and airborne particulates generated during hands-on welding instruction. With multiple students performing welding operations simultaneously, the school needed a reliable system that would provide effective source capture at individual welding booths while supporting a safe, productive learning environment.

The Challenge

Vocational welding programs present unique air filtration challenges. Unlike traditional manufacturing operations, these facilities accommodate multiple welding stations operating simultaneously, often with students performing different welding processes throughout the day.

The school required a centralized filtration system capable of servicing 20 individual welding booths while providing sufficient airflow to capture welding fumes directly at their source.

Additionally, the school wanted a system that would operate efficiently without requiring continuous airflow through welding stations that were not in use. Individual station control was important for reducing unnecessary airflow and improving overall system efficiency.

The Air Purifiers Solution

After evaluating the school’s requirements, Air Purifiers designed and provided a centralized welding fume extraction system incorporating a Micro Air RP8-3 dust and fume collector, connected to 20 Movex PR welding fume extraction arms strategically located throughout the welding facility.

The Micro Air RP8-3 system features 24 cartridge filters and a dual-blower configuration, providing a total design airflow capacity of 10,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM).

Each of the 20 welding booths was equipped with a Movex PR extraction arm, allowing students and instructors to position the extraction hood close to the welding operation. This source-capture approach collects welding fumes and smoke near the point of generation, before they can disperse throughout the classroom.

Each extraction arm was also equipped with an individually controlled motorized damper that automatically opens when a student activates the welding station and closes when the station is no longer in use. This arrangement allows airflow to be directed to active welding booths rather than continuously extracting air from all 20 stations.

The motorized damper system provides several operational advantages, including improved airflow management, reduced unnecessary air extraction, and more efficient utilization of the centralized filtration system.

All 20 extraction arms were connected through a centralized ductwork system to the Micro Air collector, where airborne welding particulates are filtered from the airstream.

Project Highlights

  • One Micro Air RP8-3 centralized dust and fume collection system.
  • 24 cartridge filters providing high-capacity particulate filtration.
  • Dual-blower configuration designed for 10,000 CFM total airflow.
  • 20 Movex PR welding fume extraction arms, one serving each welding booth.
  • 20 automatic motorized dampers, individually controlling airflow to each extraction arm.
  • Automatic damper operation based on whether the individual welding station is in use.
  • Improved airflow management by directing extraction to active welding stations.
  • Source-capture ventilation designed to remove welding fumes near the point of generation.
  • Centralized ductwork connecting individual welding stations to the filtration equipment.
  • System designed to accommodate simultaneous welding activities throughout the instructional facility.

Project Outcome

The completed installation provides the vocational school with a centralized, high-capacity welding fume extraction and filtration system serving 20 individual welding stations.

By combining the filtration capacity of the Micro Air RP8-3 collector with the flexibility of Movex PR extraction arms and automatic motorized damper controls, Air Purifiers delivered an efficient, practical solution designed to improve indoor air quality and reduce airborne welding contaminants throughout the training facility.

The automatic damper arrangement helps ensure that extraction airflow is utilized where it is needed, minimizing unnecessary air movement through inactive welding booths while maintaining convenient operation for students and instructors.

The system allows students to develop essential welding skills while learning the importance of proper fume extraction and industrial ventilation practices.

This project demonstrates Air Purifiers’ experience in designing and supplying customized welding fume collection systems with automated airflow controls for educational institutions, vocational training centers, and industrial manufacturing facilities.
