Project Overview

A fire department located in Morris County, New Jersey, contacted Air Purifiers, Inc. to design and install a modern vehicle exhaust extraction system for its firehouse.

Fire apparatus produce diesel exhaust containing harmful gases and fine particulate matter that can accumulate inside apparatus bays during vehicle startup, testing, and departure. The department recognized the importance of controlling these emissions at their source to help protect firefighters and maintain a cleaner, healthier firehouse environment.

The department required a reliable, easy-to-use exhaust extraction system that would operate automatically without interfering with emergency response operations.

The Challenge

Firehouses present unique challenges for vehicle exhaust removal. Fire apparatus must be ready to respond immediately, often with little advance notice, making it essential that any exhaust extraction equipment operate quickly and reliably.

The department needed a system that would capture engine exhaust directly at the tailpipe while allowing apparatus to depart without requiring firefighters to manually disconnect hoses or activate ventilation equipment.

The system also needed to accommodate the movement of large emergency vehicles within the apparatus bays while providing dependable operation during both routine vehicle use and emergency responses.

The Air Purifiers Solution

After evaluating the firehouse layout and operational requirements, Air Purifiers designed and installed three Nederman MAX vehicle exhaust extraction systems, each featuring a magnetic connection that attaches directly to the fire apparatus tailpipe.

The magnetic tailpipe connection provides secure exhaust capture while the apparatus is stationary and automatically disconnects as the vehicle departs the firehouse.

The three extraction systems were connected to an engineered ductwork arrangement and an exhaust blower that discharges vehicle emissions safely outside the building through the roof.

A key feature of the installation was the incorporation of a state-of-the-art automatic fan activation system utilizing radio transmitters installed in the fire apparatus.

When an equipped apparatus is started, the onboard transmitter signals the exhaust ventilation control system, automatically activating the exhaust blower. This allows the system to begin removing vehicle emissions without requiring firefighters to manually operate switches or controls.

As the apparatus exits the building, the magnetic connection releases automatically, allowing an uninterrupted departure.

This combination of automatic activation, direct tailpipe capture, and automatic disconnection provides an effective, user-friendly solution specifically designed for the demanding requirements of fire service operations.

Project Highlights

  • Three Nederman MAX vehicle exhaust extraction systems installed in the apparatus bays.
  • Magnetic tailpipe connections providing direct capture of engine exhaust.
  • Automatic disconnection as fire apparatus depart the building.
  • Roof-exhaust ventilation system designed to discharge captured emissions outside the firehouse.
  • Automatic radio-transmitter activation integrated with the apparatus to start the exhaust blower.
  • Hands-free operation requiring minimal firefighter involvement.
  • System designed to accommodate rapid emergency response and routine apparatus movements.
  • Direct source capture to minimize diesel exhaust accumulation within the apparatus bays.
  • Complete system design, equipment supply, and installation by Air Purifiers, Inc.

Project Outcome

The completed installation provides the Morris County Fire Department with a modern, fully automatic vehicle exhaust extraction system designed to reduce firefighters’ exposure to diesel exhaust and other harmful engine emissions.

By utilizing three Nederman MAX systems with magnetic tailpipe connections and automatic radio-activated controls, Air Purifiers delivered a practical solution that combines effective exhaust removal with the operational convenience required in an active firehouse.

The system automatically activates when the apparatus is started, captures exhaust directly at the tailpipe, and disconnects as the vehicle departs, allowing firefighters to focus on emergency response rather than ventilation equipment.

The fire department has expressed a high level of satisfaction with the completed installation, particularly the system’s ease of operation, automatic functionality, and integration into daily firehouse activities.

This project demonstrates Air Purifiers’ experience in designing and installing specialized vehicle exhaust extraction systems for fire departments, emergency service facilities, and municipal fleet operations.
