Dust Collection Safety

Every day, Air Purifiers, Inc. is helping industries improve their indoor air quality to meet or exceed OSHA standards for the workplace. In addition to standards for air quality, OSHA and the NFPA also provide standards and guidelines for the safe operation of dust collectors.

It is important that every dust collection system, whether existing or new, be evaluated for safety in the handling of the dust.

Spark Detection System for Industrial Materials

As part of a comprehensive approach to ensuring safe handling of industrial materials, Air Purifiers, Inc. offers spark detection systems. Whether there is particulate that is potentially combustible, and/or the industrial process involves the creation of sparks or smoldering particles, such as in grinding or welding, spark detection and extinguishment control panel provides added protection against potential fires or explosions.

Our line of cost-effective spark detection and control panel systems come with a full range of standard features, such as sophisticated detector testing, water flow monitoring, and heat detection and water deluge system, as well as air system shutdown and abort damper control.

Backblast Dampers Isolate Explosion or Fire

Backblast dampers from Air Purifiers, Inc. provide a way to automatically and immediately isolate any occurrence of explosion or fire, preventing energy from returning back through the ductwork to the building or work area and meeting NFPA standards for dust collector safety.

Available in various diameters, our CARZ Explosion Isolation Flap is constructed of materials light enough to respond in milliseconds, yet strong enough to withstand the pressure of an explosion.

The flap is designed to open whenever there is normal airflow in the duct. The damper offers protection by both preventing the effects of a dust explosion from spreading, and also by preventing stray dust from returning along the duct when the dust collector is stopped.

Abort Gates for Fire Safety

For dust collection systems that handle combustible dust, our High-Speed Abort Gates provide protection of the workspace against potential explosions or fires, meeting the requirements of NFPA 664. Abort gates are generally installed on the downstream side of the dust collector, where clean air is being recycled to the facility workspace.

In the event of an explosion or fire in the dust collection system, the abort gate, working in conjunction with a spark detection system, closes within milliseconds. The closed gate prevents sparks, flames, burning material or combustion gases from entering the facility, diverting them to a restricted area/safe zone and thus protecting the facility, equipment, and personnel.

In combination with our backblast damper, the CARZ Explosion Isolation Flap, which protects against the transmittal of sparks or explosive material on the inlet side of the collector, the High-Speed Abort Gate provides added protection on the outlet (clean air) side. With these safety devices in place, both the upstream and downstream paths to the workspace will be blocked in the case of a fire or explosion.
