Project Overview

A vocational school located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, contacted Air Purifiers, Inc. to design and install a comprehensive dust collection and air filtration system for its new woodworking shop.

The facility was designed to provide students with hands-on training in woodworking, fabrication, and finishing techniques. With multiple woodworking operations generating sawdust, wood chips, and fine airborne particulates, the school required an effective dust collection system that would support a clean, comfortable, and productive educational environment.

Unlike traditional industrial woodworking facilities, this project presented specific challenges related to equipment placement, operating noise, and indoor air quality.

The Challenge

The school had two critical requirements for the dust collection system: the collector had to be installed inside the building, and it had to operate at a low noise level suitable for an educational environment.

Conventional industrial dust collectors can generate significant operating noise and often require outdoor installation or dedicated mechanical spaces. Neither approach was practical for this facility.

The system also needed to provide effective dust extraction at woodworking stations while addressing the potential fire hazards associated with combustible wood dust.

Additionally, the school wanted to address fine airborne dust that could escape localized extraction and remain suspended in the general shop environment.

The challenge was to develop a complete dust management solution combining source capture, quiet indoor operation, spark detection, and ambient air filtration.

The Air Purifiers Solution

After evaluating the facility’s requirements, Air Purifiers selected a Nederman S-Series S750 dust collector, an indoor dust collection solution suited to applications where space, equipment placement, and operating noise are important considerations.

The S750 was incorporated into a centralized dust collection system designed to capture wood dust and particulates generated during woodworking operations while maintaining the lower noise levels required for classroom instruction.

The system was connected to three Airflow Systems AA3 extraction arms, providing flexible, positionable source capture at designated woodworking stations. These arms allow students and instructors to position extraction close to dust-generating operations, helping prevent airborne particulates from spreading throughout the shop.

To provide an additional layer of fire protection, the dust collection system was equipped with a Hansentek spark detection system. This system is designed to detect potential ignition sources traveling through the dust collection ductwork, providing an important safety measure in an environment handling combustible wood dust.

Recognizing that source-capture systems cannot collect every airborne particle, Air Purifiers also incorporated an Airflow Systems 1000R ambient air cleaner equipped with 95% efficiency filtration.

The ambient air cleaner provides supplemental filtration by continuously processing shop air to capture residual suspended dust particles that may escape the primary collection system.

Together, these systems provide a comprehensive approach to woodworking dust control, combining localized extraction, centralized dust collection, spark detection, and general room air filtration.

Project Highlights

  • One Nederman S-Series S750 dust collector selected for indoor installation and low-noise operation.
  • Three Airflow Systems AA3 extraction arms providing flexible source capture at woodworking stations.
  • Hansentek spark detection system integrated into the dust collection arrangement for additional fire protection.
  • One Airflow Systems 1000R ambient air cleaner providing supplemental room air filtration.
  • 95% efficiency filtration incorporated into the ambient air cleaning system.
  • Indoor equipment installation designed to accommodate the school’s space and operational requirements.
  • System designed to minimize disruption to classroom instruction and student communication.
  • Multiple layers of dust control addressing both directly generated and residual airborne particulates.
  • Complete system design, equipment supply, and installation by Air Purifiers, Inc.

Project Outcome

The completed installation provides the vocational school with an integrated woodworking dust collection and air filtration system designed specifically for an indoor educational environment.

By utilizing the Nederman S750 dust collector, Air Purifiers addressed the school’s requirements for indoor equipment placement and reduced operating noise without sacrificing the functionality required for woodworking dust extraction.

The addition of three Airflow Systems extraction arms provides localized dust capture, while the Hansentek spark detection system adds an important protective measure for the dust collection equipment.

The Airflow Systems 1000R ambient air cleaner further enhances the overall solution by filtering residual airborne dust throughout the woodworking shop.

The result is a practical, multi-layered dust management system designed to support cleaner indoor air, equipment protection, and a more comfortable learning environment for students and instructors.

This project demonstrates Air Purifiers’ ability to develop customized dust collection solutions for educational facilities where space limitations, noise control, fire protection, and indoor air quality must all be considered.
